As purty as a lady bird ...

One of my quiet heroes, Lady Bird Johnson, has passed. She was in the White House when I was born (6 months after the assassination of JFK) and worked tirelessly for wildflower conservation. It is because of her that you see masses of wildflowers planted along the sides of the highways.

I remember seeing an interview with her on TV when I was younger and I was so impressed by her gentle toughness and conviction, her way of 'plain talking'. She embodied for me the image of the elegant Southern lady and fueled my lifelong love of plants and flowers.

Her legacy will live on.
